Groundbreaking EV Battery Management from LG and Qualcomm

The electric vehicle revolution is in full swing, and one of the keys to its success lies in smarter, more efficient battery management. LG Energy Solution, a global leader in lithium-ion batteries, has teamed up with Qualcomm Technologies to deliver a game-changer: a revolutionary system-on-chip (SoC)-based battery management system (BMS) diagnostic solution. This cutting-edge technology, running on Qualcomm’s SnapdragonÂŽ Digital Chassis™, promises to redefine how EV batteries are monitored, maintained, and optimized—making EVs safer, more reliable, and more convenient.

A Powerful Partnership Driving EV Innovation

This isn’t the first time LG Energy Solution and Qualcomm have joined forces. They’ve been collaborating on next-gen BMS solutions, and this new agreement solidifies their shared vision for the future of EV battery technology. What’s particularly exciting is how this technology integrates with the SnapdragonÂŽ Car-to-Cloud Connected Services Platform. This gives automakers a seamless way to access and use these powerful diagnostics—both in the car and through cloud-based services.

“We’ve proven the strength of our BMS technology through this collaboration with Qualcomm,” an LG Energy Solution spokesperson commented. “Now, we’re thrilled to bring this innovation to the market.”

A Leap Forward in EV Battery Safety and Performance

So, what makes this new BMS solution so special? It all comes down to the use of a high-performance SoC—a powerful computer chip. Traditional BMS systems, limited by less powerful hardware, just can’t handle the complex tasks needed for truly optimized battery management. This SoC-based approach, however, unlocks a whole new level of sophistication.

Think about safety: With significantly increased processing power, the system can gather and analyze a wealth of data. This enables faster, more precise detection of potential problems, like thermal runaway—a critical safety concern for EV batteries. It’s like having a highly vigilant guardian constantly monitoring the battery’s health, ready to alert you to any issues.

And then there’s battery lifespan—a major concern for EV owners. Degradation diagnostics get a massive upgrade. We’re talking about over 80 times more computing power! This unlocks complex algorithms that were previously impossible. Now, predicting how much life a battery has left and pinpointing the performance of individual components (like the anode and cathode) becomes a reality. This means more accurate range predictions and a better understanding of long-term battery health.

What’s even more impressive is that this advanced system works in real-time, right there in the vehicle. No need to send data to a server and wait for a response. Driving information and other crucial data are analyzed on the spot, enabling immediate adjustments and proactive maintenance.

LG Energy Solution’s “B.around” Brand: A New Era for EV Battery Services

This move is part of LG Energy Solution’s broader strategy to expand into the software and services space. Their new “B.around” brand embodies this forward-thinking approach, offering a comprehensive suite of solutions that go beyond traditional BMS. Imagine cloud integration, AI-powered diagnostics, and seamless integration with software-defined vehicles (SDVs).

With over two decades of BMS expertise and more than 8,000 patents, LG Energy Solution is a serious player in this field. Their track record speaks for itself: over 90% safety diagnostic detection rate and an incredibly low degradation diagnostic error rate of around 1%.

“This industry-first SoC-based BMS is a game-changer for EVs, and we’re proud to partner with Qualcomm on this,” said David Kim, CEO of LG Energy Solution. “Through B.around, we’re confident that EV drivers will experience a whole new level of value.”

O.H. Kwon, a senior executive at Qualcomm, added, “We’re excited to work with LG Energy Solution on these advanced BMS diagnostics. Qualcomm is committed to driving automotive innovation, and this collaboration will transform how energy is managed in EVs, maximizing safety and performance.”
