As the European heavy-duty and ultra-fast charging (UFC) markets transition from “early adopter” to “critical infrastructure,” the legal requirements for energy billing are tightening. For years, the industry has grappled with a “metering gap”—a lack of compact, highly accurate DC meters that meet the stringent Measuring Instruments Directive (MID 2014/32/EU) standards.
German pioneer DZG Metering GmbH has officially closed this gap, unveiling the GSH4020. It is not only the most compact DC meter on the market at just 4 DIN modules wide, but it also introduces a world-first for legal metrology: remote firmware update capability during live operation.
The Precision Revolution: Why Class C Matters
Most DC meters currently deployed in the field meet Accuracy Class B (±1.0%). While sufficient for early rollouts, the high energy throughput of modern “hyperchargers” means that even small percentage errors translate to significant revenue leakage or overcharging.
The GSH series from DZG meets Accuracy Class C (±0.5%), delivering twice the precision of the industry standard. For fleet depots and public charging hubs processing megawatts of power daily, this level of precision is essential for revenue-grade transparency and legal compliance under German calibration law (MessEG/MessEV).
Future-Proofing via the Cloud
The standout feature of the new GSH platform is its connectivity. Historically, updating the firmware of a certified meter required physical access, often involving the removal of the device or the breaking of security seals—a costly logistical hurdle for operators.
DZG’s new platform allows for PTB-approved remote software updates directly through the charging station’s controller. This ensures that as OCMF (Open Charge Metering Format) standards evolve or new security protocols are mandated, operators can upgrade their entire network over-the-air (OTA) without interrupting a single charging session.
Scalability: From Wallboxes to Megawatt Charging (MCS)
DZG has designed the GSH series as a modular platform to cover the entire spectrum of e-mobility:
- GSH4020 (The Compact King): At 4 DIN modules, it is designed for space-constrained DC fast chargers where every millimeter of rail space is premium.
- GSH6080 (The Hub Workhorse): Supporting up to 1000V and 800A, this 6-DIN module unit is the new standard for high-power highway charging.
- GSH6225 (The Heavy-Duty Giant): Targeting the upcoming Megawatt Charging System (MCS) for trucks and buses, it handles up to 1500V and 1500A, featuring a unique 5-wire measurement system to account for energy losses across the entire delivery path.
A One-Stop Shop for Compliance
Beyond hardware, DZG is positioning itself as an authoritative partner in the approval process. The company operates Germany’s first certified DC meter test facility (up to 1000A) and provides extensive consulting for EVSE manufacturers seeking MID and LNE (French) approvals.
“We have been developing MID-certified meters for charging infrastructure since 2019,” says Michael Zintl, Managing Director of DZG Metering GmbH. “Maintaining in-house production is the only way we can ensure the quality and regulatory compliance required for this mission-critical hardware.“
Industry Impact
For Charge Point Operators (CPOs), the DZG GSH series represents a shift from “compliance as a burden” to “compliance as an asset.” With 300,000-session internal memory, cryptographic signatures, and extreme temperature resilience (-40°C to +80°C), these meters provide the data integrity needed to defend billing disputes and satisfy tax authorities across the EU.
As the industry moves toward 2025/2030 targets, the marriage of high-precision German metrology and modern IoT connectivity marks a new era for transparent, scalable EV charging.
