EQONIC Group, a pioneering UK battery technology company, today announced a breakthrough battery system poised to disrupt the entire energy storage industry. The revolutionary technology addresses the three most critical challenges facing widespread renewable energy adoption: cost, safety, and supply chain sustainability.
EQONIC has developed a next-generation battery utilizing a proprietary, composite material that is entirely lithium-free, sodium-free, and rare-earth-free. This fundamental shift in material science achieves a staggering 70% reduction in material costs compared to traditional lithium metal batteries.
This breakthrough translates to an aggressive target manufactured cost of just £50/kWh at scale, which is approximately half the current industry average, positioning EQONIC as a potential global cost leader in energy storage.
Zero Fire Risk and Sustainable Supply Chain
The materials chosen for the EQONIC battery are inherently non-flammable, completely eliminating the risk of thermal runaway and fire—a significant barrier to the widespread adoption of battery storage in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.
Furthermore, the technology strategically solves critical supply chain vulnerabilities. By using only abundant, responsibly sourced materials and avoiding rare earth metals, lithium, and sodium, the company sidesteps geopolitical tensions and the environmental costs associated with extracting and refining critical minerals. The batteries are designed for complete recyclability from conception, supporting a true circular economy model.
Jas Kandola, Founder and CEO of EQONIC Group, stated: “The energy storage industry is stuck in a compromise, choosing between cost, safety, or sustainability. We’ve eliminated that trade-off entirely. The result is technology that costs 70% less at the material level than traditional lithium batteries while being completely safe and sustainable.“
Aggressive Roadmap to Lead Density Performance
EQONIC’s accelerated energy density roadmap forecasts the technology will rapidly surpass current market leaders:
- 2026: Surpass the performance of Sodium-Ion (Na-ion) batteries.
- 2027: Exceed the performance of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries.
- 2029: Achieve industry-leading Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) performance levels.
Licensing Model for Rapid Global Deployment
Rather than incurring the substantial capital risk of building its own gigafactories, EQONIC plans to operate as a technology provider. The company will license its technology and secure collaborations with established global manufacturers.
This strategy allows multiple partners to deploy EQONIC’s innovations across diverse applications and markets—from grid-scale storage and commercial microgrids to residential backup systems—while reducing the company’s capital risk and directly competing with large-scale Asian producers.
While developing this breakthrough technology through its Innovations division, EQONIC has also launched a successful Commercial division, which is currently installing and selling LFP-based energy storage solutions for B2B and residential clients, building a multi-million-pound project pipeline with high-profile clients.
