AYK Energy will unveil what it describes as the world’s first swappable containerised marine battery system at SMM Hamburg (1–4 September, Hall B6, stand 342).
The marine battery manufacturer’s latest technology milestone is aimed at transforming electrification across the commercial vessel market by removing engineering and cost barriers to enable a new era of electric ships.
AYK confirmed it is already receiving orders for its ‘Cosmos’ battery having successfully completed the New Technology Qualification (TQ) stage. For new technologies, DNV’s Technology Qualification (TQ) process demonstrates that an innovation is mature enough to begin formal class approval.

The system also removes the need for a dedicated battery room which can be a highly complex engineering job and significant cost.“
Operational Flexibility and Modular Infrastructure
The system’s flexibility allows batteries to be swapped or permanently installed depending on operational needs, eliminating much of the custom design work previously required for vessel battery installations.
The containerised units can be stacked onshore, charged off-site, and transported to ports when required. Vessels can load multiple batteries quickly to meet energy demands—such as short-sea fully electric routes in the EU to meet Emissions Trading System (ETS) standards. Additionally, the system can supply temporary hotel-load power while docked to reduce emissions in port, operate as a swappable system between voyages, or be permanently integrated for hybrid and fully electric operations.
Advanced Safety Architecture and Target Markets
The Cosmos battery is built with eight independent levels of safety, featuring IP67 ingress protection and an A60 fire rating.
AYK Energy is targeting the ferry, RoPax, and passenger vessel markets, while also catering to tugboats, feeder vessels, hybrid commercial craft, and workboats requiring battery power. The company previously achieved an industry first by securing marine class certification for Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries with DNV.
