Integrals Power: LMFP Cells Achieve 1,000-Cycle Milestone

MILTON KEYNES, UKIntegrals Power, a pioneer in advanced battery materials, today announced a significant breakthrough: its next-generation Lithium Manganese Iron Phosphate (LMFP) cathode active materials have successfully passed the 1,000-cycle milestone. This achievement comes during ongoing durability testing conducted by the world-renowned testing and research company, QinetiQ. The development marks a crucial step towards more affordable and longer-range electric vehicles (EVs).

Exceptional Durability Confirmed by Rigorous Testing

The ongoing test program, meticulously conducted by QinetiQ, has been running for over five months. During this period, the LMFP material (specifically, an 80:20 composition), fabricated into pouch cells by QinetiQ, has accumulated more than 1,000 charge and discharge cycles at a 1 C rate. Remarkably, these cells have retained over 80% of their original capacity, thereby demonstrating exceptional durability and robust performance.

Behnam Hormozi, Founder and CEO of Integrals Power, emphasized the broader implications of these results. “We believe that LMFP cells will enable EV battery packs to become less costly and less carbon-intensive to manufacture,” Hormozi stated. “Crucially, they will also offer the range, the long life, and the safety that EVs and other applications need to go mainstream in global markets. These latest results demonstrate to our customers that they can do exactly that, and as QinetiQ continues the test programme we’re confident that the cells will still show impressive capacity retention as we progress to the next milestone.

LMFP: A Breakthrough in Battery Chemistry

Integrals Power’s LMFP materials feature a class-leading 80% manganese content. This innovative composition significantly increases energy density by up to 20% compared to conventional Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistries. Furthermore, LMFP cells promise lower costs and greater safety than Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) chemistries, currently favored by many global OEMs. Thus, LMFP represents a genuine breakthrough in cell chemistry, offering an optimal balance of key attributes for EV batteries.

High energy density LMFP batteries offer enhanced performance and extended operational range. Consequently, they are also ideal for Maritime, Defence systems, and other demanding applications that require compact, reliable, and long-lasting power sources. Moreover, Integrals Power is already developing the second-generation of its LMFP material. This next iteration boasts 30% less internal resistance than the first generation, and preliminary tests have already shown a distinct performance improvement, with cycle life and retained capacity expected to be greatly improved.

Strengthening a Sustainable and Secure Domestic Supply Chain

Integrals Power produced the LMFP material used in these tests at its UK pilot plant, utilizing raw materials sourced from Europe and North America. This capability demonstrates that this next-generation cell chemistry can significantly reduce the automotive industry’s reliance on China, which currently dominates LFP production.

In light of China’s recent announcement regarding new export controls on LFP and LMFP cathode technologies, the strategic importance of developing and localizing battery materials within the UK and Europe has increased significantly. These restrictions highlight the growing fragility of global supply chains. They also underscore the critical need for sovereign capability in essential battery components. Integrals Power views this situation as both a challenge and a considerable opportunity – to accelerate the commercialization of its proprietary LMFP technology and contribute meaningfully to the resilience and independence of the UK’s energy storage ecosystem.
