Meridian Unveils Major EV Fast-Charging Hub at Auckland Airport

AUCKLAND, NZ – July 8, 2025 – Meridian Energy today officially opened a new fast-charging hub at Auckland Airport, marking a pivotal moment in New Zealand’s journey towards more sustainable transport. This state-of-the-art facility, purpose-built to meet the real-world needs of electric vehicle (EV) drivers, represents a significant leap forward in accessibility, efficiency, and environmental impact.

“As New Zealand’s largest city and the leader in EV adoption, Auckland provides the ideal place for us to launch Meridian’s first fast-charging hub,” stated Joanna Yip, Meridian Public Charging Product Manager. She added, “Auckland Airport, a high-traffic gateway for both locals and international visitors, offers the perfect location to showcase our commitment to decarbonization and driver-centric design.”

Designed for Driver Needs and Accessibility

Strategically situated within the Auckland Airport Shopping Precinct, the new hub boasts a comprehensive array of features tailored for optimal user experience. It includes five DC fast chargers, each providing up to 160kW. Each charger also features two charge points, allowing a total of 10 vehicles to charge simultaneously. The hub employs dynamic power allocation, a smart system that reduces wait times and maximizes overall charging efficiency for all users.

Meridian placed a strong emphasis on accessibility. Two chargers specifically cater to drivers with greater accessibility needs. These units comfortably accommodate wheelchair users, providing sufficient space to navigate around both the vehicle and the charger. Furthermore, they feature an adjustable user screen, catering to various heights for ease of use. For larger EVs or those with attachments, a dedicated drive-through charger offers convenience for vehicles towing trailers, boats, or caravans. The hub also ensures broad compatibility across the EV market, providing both CCS and CHAdeMO connectors to support a wide range of EV models. Looking to the future, the site includes ample room to add more chargers as the demand for electric vehicle charging continues to grow.

Joanna Yip further elaborated on the design philosophy: “We designed this hub to tackle real pain points for drivers — especially queuing. We listened intently to the EV community and built a site that is truly accessible, highly efficient, and actively supports communities in their efforts to decarbonize.”

Powering Green Mobility with Certified Renewable Energy

Meridian’s commitment to sustainability extends to the very source of its power. Meridian rigorously matches every kilowatt-hour delivered at the Auckland Airport hub with Certified Renewable Energy. This energy originates directly from Meridian’s extensive network of hydro stations and wind farms, ensuring that every charge directly supports renewable energy generation. Beyond simply powering EVs, charging at this specific site also helps fund broader community decarbonization projects through Meridian’s Certified Renewable Energy programme.

Looking ahead, Meridian Energy holds ambitious plans for its public charging network. “We aim to become the largest public EV charging provider in the country,” Yip confirmed. “We also plan to expand our Certified Renewable Energy product across our entire public charging network, so this launch is truly just the beginning of our journey.” This initiative underscores Meridian’s deep dedication to accelerating New Zealand’s transition towards a more sustainable, electrified transport future.
