Stagecoach South West has announced a significant partnership with e-fleet solutions provider VEV to accelerate the electrification of its bus fleet across Devon. This collaboration marks a major milestone in the operator’s sustainable public transport transformation for the region. The comprehensive charging network, which VEV will design, build, and manage, will deliver a combined capacity of 7,200kW across three key depot locations, supporting a full electric fleet of 110 buses.
Building a Robust Charging Backbone in Devon
The project focuses on three strategic depots: Torquay, Barnstaple, and Exeter. Construction has already started at the Torquay depot, which will serve as the flagship installation with 27 high-powered 150kW chargers. This site is slated to become a 100% electric vehicle (EV) depot. The Exeter depot will house 10 chargers, while Barnstaple will accommodate 11, creating a robust charging ecosystem across the region. This infrastructure will form the backbone of Stagecoach’s electric bus operations, with the full electric fleet expected to be operational by early 2026.
According to Peter Knight, Stagecoach South West Managing Director, the partnership is a major step forward. “The expertise and technology that VEV brings, particularly their VEV-IQ platform, gives us confidence in delivering reliable, efficient electric bus services to our customers,” he said. “This investment underscores our dedication to reducing emissions while enhancing the quality of public transport for communities across North Devon and Torbay.“
A Digital-First Approach for Fleet Management
All new charging infrastructure will be managed through VEV’s smart charging and digital energy management platform, VEV-IQ. The platform will monitor and optimize power usage, charging scheduling, and charger status across all three sites. This digital-first approach ensures maximum efficiency and reliability for Stagecoach’s electric bus operations, which will be essential for managing a large fleet.
Simon Cubitt, Commercial Director (Bus and Coach) of VEV, emphasized the importance of this integrated system. “This project demonstrates our commitment to supporting operators throughout their electrification journey—from initial infrastructure deployment through to ongoing optimization via our VEV-IQ platform,” he said. By taking a digital-first approach to fleet electrification, VEV ensures Stagecoach can operate efficiently and cost-effectively, while delivering a cleaner, more comfortable journey for their customers.
The VEV-IQ platform will provide real-time visibility and control over the entire charging ecosystem. This supports charger uptime, optimizes energy costs, and provides operational insights that help maximize asset utilization and performance across all three depot locations.
Transforming the Passenger Experience
Stagecoach’s new electric buses will significantly transform the passenger experience across the region. They will provide quieter, smoother, and more comfortable journeys. The buses will also feature the latest accessibility features, delivering a much-needed boost to the region’s public transport network. This collaboration supports Stagecoach South West’s ambitious electrification program, which will benefit both the local community and the environment.
