Will Volkswagen Dare to Electrify the Iconic GTI Badge?
Volkswagen has finally addressed the burning question: Will the legendary GTI badge soon grace an electric vehicle? The brand has just confirmed the speculation.
With a cautious start, automakers are now delving into new segments with electric technology, particularly drawn to the performance car sector to showcase their expertise. Volkswagen is no exception, gearing up to make a comeback in the GTI category.
The Electric GTI: A New Chapter Begins
Andreas Mindt, Volkswagen‘s Head of Design, broke the news on Instagram: “The Golf GTI first made waves at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1975, starting with 5,000 units. Today, we’ve sold over 2.8 million. In 2026, we will unveil an electric version of this iconic model.”
The Volkswagen ID GTI: A 286 HP Front-Wheel Drive?
While technical details remain under wraps, the hot hatch is likely to inherit the group’s new APP550 electric powertrain. This revamped unit is capable of churning out up to 286 horsepower. Similar to the upcoming ID.2, the motor would be front-mounted.
Battery size and other specifics are yet to be disclosed. Patience is key as we await this exciting addition to the brand’s storied lineup, which is set to closely compete with the upcoming Alpine A290, the zesty variant of the Renault 5.
