RA’ANANA, Israel β Airengy has signed a partnership agreement with European salt and chemical producer Nobian to explore and assess the feasibility of a large-scale compressed air energy storage project in Denmark. The proposed Compressed Air Power Plant, or CAPP, would use an existing underground salt cavern operated by Nobian and is designed to support long-duration energy storage for the grid.
The project is projected to offer up to 2.5 GWh, or 2,500 megawatt-hours, of storage capacity, with electrical output in the range of 3 MW to 10 MW. It is the fourth European power-plant partnership announced by Airengy, following previously announced projects in England with Kistos, Romania with Hagag Europe, and Germany with SEFE.
Leveraging Geological Infrastructure
Under the agreement, Nobian will be responsible for all works related to the salt cavern. This includes regulatory compliance, permitting processes, local community communication, stakeholder management, and related surface infrastructure. Nobian will also remain the official license holder and operator of the cavern.
Airengy will be responsible for the system design of its proprietary AirBattery technology. This covers the engineering of the air compression system and the electricity generation units. The technology stores surplus renewable electricity as high-pressure compressed air inside the cavern, which is later released to generate power during periods of peak demand or grid congestion.
Louwrens op de Beek, Director of Energy Storage at Nobian, said the company sees large-scale energy storage as a critical building block of a reliable and affordable renewable energy system. He said the collaboration with Airengy combines Nobianβs salt cavern expertise with Airengyβs innovative technology to unlock new ways to store and release energy over longer periods, helping to reduce grid congestion. He added that the project fits Nobianβs Grow Greener Together strategy and its ambition to be a balancing partner in the Danish energy system.
Strategic Expansion
Airengy said the new agreement continues its expansion into key European target markets and demonstrates the companyβs implementation capabilities. Chairman of the Board Yiftah Ron-Tal said the collaboration connects Airengyβs energy-storage technology with existing geological infrastructure and industry know-how, and shows the companyβs ability to create partnerships with leading companies in strategic markets.
The agreement also supports the two-phase European strategy Airengy outlined in December. In the first phase, the company will form partnerships for the construction and design of power plants with an output of 1 MW to 1.5 MW in Romania and England, while at the same time advancing the establishment of larger power plants in Romania and Denmark.
Tal Raz, CEO of Airengy, said the Nobian agreement is another significant milestone in the companyβs development. He noted that Nobianβs experience in salt mining, low-carbon essential chemicals, and underground energy storage caverns, together with its engineering capabilities, makes it a strong partner for large-scale commercial projects. Raz said the collaboration strengthens Airengyβs ability to advance additional commercial projects and supports its goal of becoming a leading player in long-duration energy-storage infrastructure in Europe.
Data Center Opportunity
Raz also said Airengy is exploring an expansion into the data center field, which the company expects to become one of the most significant growth engines for energy infrastructure demand in the coming decade. He said the company believes its CAPP technology, combined with strategic partnerships such as Nobian, can serve as a basis for advanced energy solutions for that market as well.
The project is currently in the evaluation stage as the two companies assess technical integration, regulatory pathways, and commercial parameters before moving forward.
