Battery Passport Countdown: Barcelona Tackles Storage Compliance

Battery and Energy Storage Europe, the continent’s leading collaboration platform for battery innovation, is launching a major campaign to address a looming crisis: the implementation of the EU Battery Passport beyond the electric vehicle (EV) sector. With the mandatory February 2027 deadline rapidly approaching, the Barcelona event will serve as a crucial staging ground for grid-scale, industrial, and long-duration energy storage companies scrambling to achieve compliance.

The organisers have announced a comprehensive programme focused on applications often overlooked in the Passport discussion, including:

  • Stationary Energy Storage (grid-scale and residential)
  • Long-Duration Systems (LDS)
  • Industrial Batteries
  • Emerging Applications in aerospace, maritime, and rail electrification

This targeted focus comes just five months before the regulation takes legal effect, creating an urgent need for actionable, real-world solutions across the full spectrum of battery applications.

The Ticking Clock: From Regulation to Readiness

The EU Battery Passport is more than a simple digital document; it is a fundamental shift in supply chain accountability. It mandates a digital record documenting a battery’s entire lifecycle, tracking composition, performance, carbon footprint, and recycled content.

Mandatory from February 2027 for all rechargeable EV, industrial, and LMT batteries over 2 kWh sold in the EU, the passport is linked via a scannable QR code. While high-profile EV manufacturers have been preparing for years, the challenge for utility-scale providers and industrial integrators is distinct and requires immediate attention.

The dedicated Battery Passport programme at the event will feature deep dives into the necessary digital infrastructure and compliance mechanisms, including:

  • Establishing reliable data management systems.
  • Integrating verification processes throughout complex supply chains.
  • Ensuring recycling traceability required by the new legislation.

Sessions will include technology demonstrations, high-level policy discussions, and collaborative working groups designed to move companies from conceptual understanding to practical implementation.

Compliance as a Competitive Edge

Ken Davies, Conference Programme Director at Battery and Energy Storage Europe, framed the programme as an essential intervention for the industry.

The Battery Passport represents one of the most significant regulatory shifts our industry has faced. While the EV sector has dominated the conversation, there’s a critical need to address how this regulation applies to stationary storage and the innovative technologies powering Europe’s energy transition,” said Davies.

With the clock ticking toward February 2027, Battery and Energy Storage Europe will shine a light on the practical implementation requirements for these often-overlooked sectors. Our mission in Barcelona is to connect stakeholders with actionable solutions and turn compliance into a decisive competitive advantage across the full spectrum of battery applications.

Battery and Energy Storage Europe will take place on 8–9 September 2026 at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue. The event is organised by Fira de Barcelona in partnership with 104-Media.
