EVERETT, WASHINGTON — Fluke Corporation has announced the launch of the Fluke FEV500, an all-in-one testing solution designed explicitly for high-power DC Level 3 EV charging stations. Engineered to act as a “virtual electric vehicle,” the portable analyzer enables field service technicians to execute comprehensive safety, communication, and interoperability validation without requiring an actual vehicle on-site.
The introduction of the FEV500 targets a critical industry pain point: network reliability. With current data indicating that approximately one in five charging stations in the United States sits non-operational, addressing infrastructure downtime has become paramount for fleet operators managing strict timelines and commercial operators looking to preserve consumer trust.
Unlike standard AC charging hardware, high-capacity Level 3 stations operate under intense energy loads and manage complex digital handshake protocols, which frequently create bottlenecks during commissioning and ongoing maintenance cycles.
“With the FEV500, Fluke is redefining how fast DC EV charging stations are tested and maintained,” stated Theo Brillhart, Technology Director, R&D at Fluke Corporation. “Fast DC charging is the backbone of the EV transition but the truth is, reliability is still the industry’s weakest link. We built the FEV500 to close that gap. It replaces uncertainty with insight and turns testing from a bottleneck into a competitive advantage.“
Consolidating the Field Technician Toolkit
Traditionally, isolating faults within a DC fast charger required field service teams to transport and configure multiple distinct diagnostic instruments, including digital multimeters, insulation testers, and oscilloscopes. The FEV500 consolidates these performance, hardware safety, and digital communication checks into a single device.
The platform is built to validate compliance against key international eMobility standards, specifically ISO 15118 and DIN SPEC 70121, which dictate the digital communication layer between an electric vehicle and electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). By operating without an external power source, the FEV500 simulates diverse real-world charging scenarios to identify communication dropouts or interoperability mismatches before they cause terminal downtime.
Guided Workflows and Non-Invasive Diagnostics
To address technical skill gaps in the field, the analyzer features automated testing routines and a user-friendly interface that delivers immediate PASS/FAIL results. Integrated guided workflows standardize best practices for commissioning, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance without requiring advanced specialization or manual parameter entry.
Crucially for enterprise fleet operators, the system expedites diagnostics by conducting all necessary evaluations through a single external connection point. Technicians can validate internal systems and extract compliance data without opening the outer enclosure or disassembling the charging terminal, protecting active components and minimizing repair time.
Mobility and Depot Deployment
Designed for mobile field service fleets, the FEV500 is integrated into a rugged, wheeled chassis to ease transport across depot environments and public charging plazas. The device also features a removable battery configuration, simplifying compliance and logistics for technicians traveling by air between regional networks.
