GOTHENBURG, Sweden – Polestar has unveiled a major upgrade to the Polestar 3, enhancing its fast‑charging performance and overall efficiency with a new 800 Volt electrical architecture and the introduction of Breathe Charge, an innovative adaptive battery software system. The updates enable significantly faster DC charging and a more seamless long‑distance driving experience for Polestar 3 owners.
With the new 800 Volt architecture, the Polestar 3 can now reach a peak DC charging rate of 350 kW, allowing the vehicle to charge from 10–80% in as little as 22 minutes at compatible fast‑charging stations. This places the Polestar 3 among the fastest‑charging vehicles in its segment and underscores Polestar’s ambition to make electric mobility as convenient as possible.
A System‑Level Upgrade: 800 Volt Architecture
The 800 Volt architecture represents a comprehensive system‑level upgrade that fundamentally changes the vehicle’s performance, electrical, and thermal characteristics. Several critical components have been redesigned, including new batteries, motors, inverters, cable harnesses, and their routing, all optimized around the higher voltage platform.
The higher voltage reduces energy losses across the system, improving overall efficiency while lowering thermal stress on components. This allows for faster charging speeds without the need for excessively thick cabling, ultimately supporting long‑distance driving with less time spent at the plug.
Michael Lohscheller, CEO of Polestar, says: “The extensive upgrade to an 800 Volt electrical architecture, coupled with cutting‑edge battery software, delivers true added value and usability to Polestar 3 drivers thanks to faster charging that is among the best in its segment.”
Breathe Charge: Adaptive Battery Software
Polestar 3 leverages Breathe Charge, an advanced adaptive battery software developed in collaboration with Breathe Battery Technologies and deployed on the Volvo‑developed SPA2 platform. The software uses a real‑time simulation of the battery’s condition to optimize DC fast charging performance under virtually any conditions.
Breathe Charge continuously monitors key parameters, including battery temperature, state of charge, and cell behavior, and dynamically adjusts the charging speed in real time. This approach ensures that the Polestar 3 can charge as quickly and safely as possible while protecting long‑term battery health.
In real‑world use, the Breathe Charge system delivers ultrafast, reliable charging: a 10–minute stop at a compatible 350 kW charger can add up to 38% more range than charging without the software. The technology is especially effective in cooler weather, where fast‑charging performance traditionally tends to decline.
Dr Yan Zhao, CEO at Breathe Battery Technologies, explains: “The key benefit to Polestar 3 drivers with Breathe Charge is that it improves charging performance and consistency in all real‑world conditions – notably also in cool weather circumstances. Testing data shows that our software enables Polestar 3 drivers to add as much range during a 10‑minute charging session at low temperatures as they would charging without Breathe Charge in an optimal temperature range.”
Strategic Implications for Fast Charging
The Polestar 3 upgrade illustrates how advanced software and higher‑voltage architectures are converging to redefine fast‑charging performance. The 800 Volt platform and adaptive battery management together extend the practical usability of EVs for long‑distance, everyday use, while reducing the effective downtime at public charging stations.
For EV charging operators and infrastructure providers, this evolution reinforces the importance of high‑output DC fast‑charging stations capable of supporting vehicles like the Polestar 3. As 800 Volt architectures and intelligent charging software become more widespread, the ability to deliver consistent, high‑rate charging in diverse environmental conditions will be a key differentiator.
