EVCAN and OCA Partner to Standardize US EV Charging Infrastructure

MEDFORD, MA — For the modern electric vehicle driver, the experience of finding a charger often feels like a gamble. Between broken hardware and software that refuses to “talk” to the car, the promise of a seamless energy transition has remained frustratingly out of reach.

Now, a high-stakes partnership between the Electric Vehicle Charging Accessibility Network (EVCAN) and the Open Charge Alliance (OCA) is looking to rewrite that script. By mandating a universal “language” for charging infrastructure, the duo aims to end the era of “bricked” chargers and proprietary silos.

A Global Standard for Local Power

The heart of this agreement lies in the adoption of OCPP 2.0.1 (Open Charge Point Protocol). Until recently, many charging networks operated on closed systems. If a network provider went out of business, the physical charging stations they left behind became expensive, unusable scrap metal.

This partnership changes the math. By prioritizing OCPP 2.0.1, EVCAN—a program of the non-profit Efficiency Forward—is ensuring that hardware and software are no longer permanently tethered.

This collaboration is a pivotal moment for infrastructure reliability,” says Tina Halfpenny, Executive Director and CEO of EVCAN. “We are moving toward a future where charging management is not just open, but also lowers costs for everyone involved—from the utility provider to the driver.

The “Gold Standard” of Hardware

To guide this transition, EVCAN has launched its Qualified Products List (QPL). This isn’t just a directory; it is a vetted roster of manufacturers that have passed rigorous independent reviews for interoperability and grid security.

Current industry leaders on the list, such as Driivz, EVConnect, and Wevo, are already setting the pace. For state agencies managing federal funds from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, the QPL acts as a crucial “buyer’s guide” to prevent taxpayer money from being spent on obsolete technology.

Lonneke Driessen-Mutters, Operational Director at the Open Charge Alliance, emphasized the weight of this move. “By aligning EVCAN’s mission with our global community, we are accelerating the deployment of chargers that can scale with the needs of the American public.

Why This Matters for the Grid

This isn’t just about convenience for drivers; it’s about the stability of the U.S. electrical grid. Open standards allow utilities to manage “demand response”—slowing down charging during peak hours to prevent blackouts. Without the interoperability provided by OCPP 2.0.1, this level of coordination is nearly impossible.

Looking Ahead: National Briefing on January 8

The industry will get its first deep dive into these new standards early next year. EVCAN and OCA have scheduled a national webinar for January 8, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. EST.

The session is expected to serve as a roadmap for utility managers, developers, and policymakers. It will cover how to utilize the QPL and how to ensure that new charging installations remain flexible and “future-proof” for decades to come. Interested participants can register for the webinar here.

As the race to electrify America’s highways intensifies, the EVCAN-OCA partnership may be the bridge that finally connects a fractured industry to a reliable future.
