EQONIC Group Signals Commercial Scaling with Heavyweight Board Appointments

LONDONEQONIC Group, the UK-based innovator behind a disruptive lithium-free and rare-earth-free battery architecture, has announced two high-profile additions to its senior leadership team. The appointments of John Saunders as Executive Director and Angela Knight CBE as Non-Executive Director mark a strategic pivot for the firm as it moves to commercialize a technology promising a 70% reduction in material costs compared to traditional lithium-ion cells.

The timing of these appointments is significant. As the global EV and energy storage systems (ESS) markets grapple with supply chain volatility and the environmental costs of mineral extraction, EQONIC is positioning its “rare-earth-free” composite chemistry as the definitive answer to the industry’s “trilemma” of cost, safety, and sustainability.

Strengthening the Commercial Framework

By bringing in John Saunders, EQONIC gains 30 years of high-level expertise from institutions including Barclays, UBS, and Deutsche Bank. Saunders’ background in regulation and acquisitions is tailored for EQONIC’s specific business model: rather than pursuing the capital-intensive path of building its own gigafactories, the company intends to license its technology to established Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).

EQONIC’s technology represents a genuine paradigm shift,” Saunders noted, emphasizing that the removal of fundamental industry barriers—namely cost and thermal runaway risk—is what attracted him to the role.

Complementing this is Angela Knight CBE, whose tenure as CEO of the British Bankers’ Association and Energy UK brings a level of FTSE-grade governance rarely seen in mid-stage technology firms. Her presence on the board provides the institutional “ballast” required to navigate complex global licensing agreements and state-level regulatory environments.

Technical Benchmarks and Market Readiness

The core of EQONIC’s value proposition lies in its proprietary chemistry, which bypasses the need for lithium, sodium, and rare-earth metals entirely. In an industry currently obsessed with the transition from NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) to LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) to find savings, EQONIC claims a materials cost advantage that effectively resets the baseline for the entire sector.

The company’s R&D roadmap is aggressive:

  • 2026: Surpass current sodium-ion performance benchmarks.
  • 2027: Exceed LFP performance.
  • 2029: Achieve energy densities comparable to industry-leading NMC levels.

Beyond the theoretical, EQONIC is already generating revenue through its commercial division. By deploying LFP-based energy storage systems to B2B and D2B clients, the company has secured a multi-million-pound pipeline that funds its longer-term “lithium-free” research while building immediate market credibility.

The Strategic View

For the EV charging and energy storage sectors, EQONIC’s progress is a bellwether for the “post-lithium” era. If the company successfully executes its licensing strategy, we could see a rapid diversification of battery chemistries in the late 2020s, significantly reducing the geopolitical risks associated with mineral monopolies.

Jas Kandola, Founder and CEO of EQONIC Group, summarized the move: “John and Angela bring exactly the calibre of leadership we need… These appointments reflect our commitment to building a world-class organisation capable of delivering on the enormous potential of our technology.

As EQONIC adds these financial and governance heavyweights to a strategic advisory board that already includes veterans from Toyota, Williams Advanced Engineering, and Jaguar Land Rover, the message to the market is clear: the technology is no longer just a laboratory breakthrough—it is becoming a bankable commercial asset.
